AVICEMIS LabSystems
A Beacon of Innovation in Biomedical Research and Technology Transfer
About us
AVICEMIS, a pioneering initiative from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), is the result of collaborative efforts by the Active Vision research line, integrated within the Robotics Group (GRob) of the Institute of Automation and Industrial Computing (ai2). This innovative spin-off, currently in the process of being established, draws upon over two decades of expertise in robotics, mechatronics, automation, and artificial vision research.
Led by Dr. Antonio Sánchez, a professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Automation (DISA) at UPV, AVICEMIS is committed to the development and commercialization of advanced automated vision systems designed to address critical challenges in biomedical research. Its flagship product, an automated analysis machine for C. elegans research, aims to overcome the technological barriers limiting the widespread adoption of such systems in labs worldwide.
Despite remarkable advancements, significant hurdles persist, such as the need for specialized engineering knowledge, high fabrication costs, and the manual operation of complex devices. AVICEMIS seeks to break down these barriers by offering innovative solutions that integrate intelligent automation, micro-device fabrication, and seamless data processing to facilitate C. elegans research, with applications extending to disease modeling and gene identification relevant to human health.
This venture represents a decisive step in the mission of the UPV to translate cutting-edge research into impactful societal applications. By merging academic expertise with technological innovation, AVICEMIS paves the way for new tools and methodologies in the field of active vision, with a focus on providing reliable, cost-effective solutions for the scientific community.
AVICEMIS goal

Types of assays AVICEMIS can solve
The nematode C. elegans is widely used in biological research, particularly in toxicity assessments, due to its simplicity, well-mapped genome, and its ability to replicate higher organism systems like the nervous and digestive systems. Researchers have developed numerous methods using C. elegans to evaluate the effects of various toxic agents. Below is a summary of its key applications:
Lifespan and Lethality
Assesses survival rates and lethality under toxic exposure.
Locomotion Models
Evaluates the effects of toxins on neural networks through movement assays.
Feeding
Monitors changes in feeding behavior caused by toxins.
Growth and Contraction
Measures developmental impacts via body length and contraction frequency.
Reproduction and Fertility
Assesses reproductive health and offspring count in toxic environments.
Intestinal Autofluorescence
Uses lipofuscin autofluorescence as an aging marker.
Metabolism
Analyzes pharyngeal pumping and defecation cycles to determine metabolic health.
Development Models
Studies the effects of toxins on different developmental stages.
Oxidative Stress
Evaluates oxidative damage and stress markers.
Transgenerational Effects
Investigates toxicity impacts on future generations.
DNA Damage
Assesses genetic damage using techniques like qPCR and comet assays.
GFP Reporters
Uses transgenic strains with GFP to monitor biochemical responses.
Cell Cycle Arrest
Observes the impact of toxins on cellular division.
Cell Apoptosis
Examines apoptosis in cells after toxic exposure.
These assays highlight C. elegans as a versatile and essential model for toxicity research
